Appraisal Software Custom Ribbons and Plug-ins are Painful
We’ve all been there!
You fire up your computer, ready to knock out a quick job before a deadline, and you start getting those weird Microsoft messages. The appraisal software custom ribbons or plug-ins you use are slowing down Microsoft Word. Or some plug-in is preventing Excel from starting. Or Outlook had to disable your plug-in, although the error message reads like an alien language. For appraisers, appraisal software custom ribbons have their fair share of pitfalls. But first, understanding what a plug-in is and why they exist is important.
What’s a plug-in?
Plug-ins, ribbons, add-ins, extensions, and modules are all aliases for the same thing. A plug-in is a piece of software that’s added to another piece of software. A plug-in is meant to add features not present in the original, host software.
But why do we have custom ribbons, A.K.A “plug-ins”?
Plug-ins exist for one reason: somewhere, somehow, software is missing features. Sometimes the original, host software lacks important features that the plug-in provides. Examples of this sort are online meeting plug-ins for Outlook. If you’ve ever had to endure the pain of scheduling a meeting with half a dozen colleagues using Outlook, you’ve definitely asked, “Why doesn’t Outlook handle this for me?” Thank goodness for products like Calendly and Doodle. You can get plug-ins for those free services that hook straight into Outlook and make group scheduling a breeze.
Sometimes, plug-ins exist because the product behind the plug-in is missing features. Examples here are sales products that use Outlook to manage their contacts, and mailing products that use Word as a template, like old-fashioned mail merge.
What makes a good plug-in?
Plug-ins can be a blessing or a curse, depending on what they do and where they come from. Good plug-ins have a few things in common. They are simple, providing just one useful feature. They are from a dependable source, such as a big commercial software company. And they are replaceable, meaning there’s another one you can turn to if yours starts acting up. If the plug-in isn’t simple, reliable, and replaceable, then you’re opening yourself up for problems down the road.
What’s the biggest risk with appraisal software custom ribbons?
In a word, security. Some custom ribbons or plug-ins lock you into a particular version of software by failing to support upgrades. This happens often in the Microsoft Office world. Small software shops write plug-ins, but can’t keep up with the maintenance changes required when Microsoft releases updates. One of the big reasons Microsoft releases updates is to patch security holes. If you can’t apply those patches, then you’re putting yourself and your company at serious risk. Plug-ins have also been known to introduce malware that can infect not only company computers, but client computers as well.

How can you avoid plug-ins?
If at all possible, choose software that’s used through your Internet browser. That sort of software is the most modern available, and it’s often called “cloud” software. How can you tell if software is really cloud software? That’s simple. If the software relies on anything installed on your computer other than the browser, then that software is not cloud software. To be sure, try this thought experiment: Will the software work if you just grab the nearest computer and try to use it? Yes? Excellent, that’s cloud software. No? Well, then it’s not.
So play it safe. Avoid incomplete software that relies on custom ribbons or plug-ins that slow you down, cause problems and increase security risks. Use products that are safe, secure, and available anywhere you are. Appraisers should choose to use software in the cloud.
